Who is he? Rae Carruth - former wide receiver with the Carolina Panthers. He led rookie receivers in receptions and touchdowns in 1997 after being a first round draft pick.
What did he do? Carruth's pregnant girlfriend, Cherica Adams, was shot dead in a drive by shooting. The unborn child was delivered prematurely and survived. Alledgedly, Carruth conspired with several other men to kill Adams to avoid paying child support for the child.

Charged? Yep, Carruth was charged with murder, conspiracy, and shooting into an occupied vehicle. Three other men were also charged with these offences.
Sentence? On 19th January 2001, Carruth was acquitted of first-degree murder but convicted of conspiracy and two other charges in the fatal shooting of his pregnant girlfriend. He also was found guilty of shooting into an occupied vehicle and using an instrument -- a gun -- with intent to kill an unborn child. Carruth was spared the death penalty but was sentenced to at least 18 years, 11 months, with a maximum of 24 years, four months.
